How does a dedicated IP address benefit you?

Why do I need a dedicated IP for my website?

One such example is having a SSL certificate installed on your account which is needed to handle any sort of online transactions whether you’re looking to host an online store or any site that receives online payments.
SSL certificates are installed on their own dedicated IPs to add extra security by encrypting all data transferred over sites.  If your website accepts credit cards directly you will require a dedicated IP.

All newly created shared accounts are placed on the server’s shared IP which means every active client on the server uses the server’s shared IP.

What are the advantages of having a dedicated IP?

One major advantage of hosting your website on a dedicated IP is to avoid any sort of blacklisting related issues which will interrupt the server’s mail flow resulting in the server’s shared IP being blocked/Blacklisted by the RBL.

What is a RBL?

Short for Realtime Blackhole List, a list of IP addresses whose owners refuse to stop the proliferation of spam. The RBL usually lists server IP addresses from ISPs whose customers are responsible for the spam and from ISPs whose servers are hijacked for spam relay.

The majority of blacklistings are caused by spam actively from an individual account which can be hosted on the same server (and IP) as you!

Needless to say we take these sort of issues very seriously as we have a zero tolerate for any sort of spam activity on our network.

The procedure to lift the ban is to take immediate action in stopping the spam activity and then requesting the removal the server’s shared IP from the RBL.  The amount of time it takes to lift the ban of an IP varies and can take anyware from 12 to 72 hours after the request has been sent.

Does using a dedicated IP improve your site’s SEO?

This has been an on going topic of interest for quite some time and the truth of the matter is that it has not been proven.  However one thing to take into account is that Google handles virtually hosted domains and their links just the same as domains on unique IP addresses.

HostUpon Rolls Out Clustered DNS

Some of our customers may have noticed something interesting about the way we had our servers set up. Until recently, all of our hosting servers had a unique set of nameservers, just for that hosting server. Normally, this is not a problem but we noticed how this was problematic for customers whenever we found that a server-to-server transfer of an account was needed because then the domain would need to be updated with new nameservers. This was especially aggravating for certain customers that take advantage of the parked-domain and addon-domain features of our servers since then they all had to be updated.

You can imagine how it could be slightly annoying to update the nameservers for fifty domains…

Well, not anymore anyway. Earlier last week, we rolled out our domain nameserver cluster. We went from having 28 different nameservers (2 for each server) to just two:

ns1.hostupon.com

ns2.hostupon.com

What does that mean for our existing customers? Well, it means that now if an account needs to be moved, you don’t need to update your domain nameservers. When the account transfer is finished, the new server ‘takes over’ the domain zone on the cluster and updates it to point to the right system. You no longer need to change nameservers whenever the account is moved.

There’s one other thing I will bring up though, which is the best part. Remember those 28 nameservers we had before? You can continue to use them. There is no need to change the nameservers to the ones I listed above! We updated all the old nameservers to point to the same domain cluster. The cluster has been in operation for the last week without a problem. Ultimately this is a purely ‘under-the-hood’ upgrade and is there simply to make account migrations that little-bit-more smooth. It will actually help quite a bit in this case as the downtime for domain nameserver changes is as much as 24 hours, but domain ‘a’ records update within four hours in most cases.

It also simplifies things when you need to figure out what your domain nameservers are since everyone on our shared servers now uses the same ones.

Update the DNS on an existing domain name

If you already own a domain name don’t worry, you can simply point the domain to our servers.  Once you singup we will send you two name server addresses.  Simply change the name servers at your domain registrar to the ones we provided and within 24 hours or less your domain will point to our hosting servers!  You can repeat this process with as many domains as you like.

If you ‘park’ the domain, it will end up displaying the exact same website as the main domain of the account you parked it on. If you do not want it to have any kind of website but still be useful for email and other services pointed at our server, you should add it as an ‘add-on’ domain. This way it gets its own document root. If you do not put any site files in the document root, the site it shows will be blank.

A good domain name is vital to your online presence.  Choosing a domain that is relevant to your site as well as simple to type are two important things to remember when choosing a domain.  Try to keep the domain name as short as possible as a standard rule.  Keep in mind you can always purchase additional domain names so even if you chose a domain you no longer like, you can always replace it!

The Importance of Backups

While we have had previous posts on this same blog about our Premium Backup service here, that’s not really what this post is about. Our backup service is extremely useful as a short-term recovery service, and it’s great for undoing changes to your site files or databases made within the last week.

But what if you want to restore to something older than seven days? This is where it is extremely important to have your own backups. Our staff is actually quite experienced in restoring from almost any source, so if you have your own backup, we can usually restore the content from your copies, and it usually only means submitting a ticket to our support staff.

Our cPanel interface comes with everything you need to actually generate a backup. In most cases, a complete snapshot of your website can be completed by making a copy of your site files, and by saving a mysql export of your database.

To back up the files in your account, you’ll need an FTP client. There are many out there, but our favorites are SmartFTP and FileZilla. Whatever program you use, the login details are the same as your cPanel details. Once you’re connected, It’s usually as simple as copying the public_html directory from the server to your computer.

We offer unlimited storage so if you have a large website, the backup could take quite a while. Depending on the size of your account and the speed of your internet, it could take several hours.

The second half of your backup is just as important as the first: Without your mysql database, your site would just be a shell of itself and you’d have none of the content it’s collected since it was setup. You can generate a backup of your msyql database using the phpmyadmin feature in your cPanel.

A word of warning: phpmyadmin is a fully capable mysql client and some of the things it’s capable of doing could damage your site. In most cases, it’ll ask you to confirm before you do something damaging, and in the cases where major damage could occur with only a click or two, the link to do something like drop a table or database (deleting it) is red, in addition to a confirm dialog, so you will most likely not do anything you didn’t really want to do.

That aside, there are a lot of little things phpmyadmin can do so I’ll tell you what to look for. When you first get into phpmadmin, look down the left side and you’ll see a list of your databases. The first step is to click the database you want to make a backup of. The section on the right will refresh showing you a whole bunch of information about the database you selected and what you can do with it.

From here, look across the top for a tab that says ‘export’, and click it. It will refresh the page again, taking you to the export settings. With the newest versions of phpmyadmin on our servers, you do not need to do anything here except click ‘go’ in the bottom right corner.

Depending on how large your database is, this part could take a couple minutes but eventually you will get a prompt from your browser asking you to save a file. This is your database backup, and it will usually be named with the name of your database and end up in .tar.gz. An example of a filename you’d get would be ‘tempcom_database.tar.gz’ so save it where you can get to it if you need it.

Your database contains all the information that allows your site to change what it displays from day to day, so it makes sense to make a more-frequent backup of the database than your files, but if your site also allows your visitors to upload files, you may want to back up the directory where those files are stored on the same frequency you use to backup your database.

If you have more than one database for your site, repeat these last steps for each database, and you’re done!

In many cases, it’s fine to use our own built-in backup systems, but in the rare event that you want to roll your site back more than a week, it’s important to have your own clean backup of your site. It is never a bad idea to have your own backup!
